Cardigan Right For You

Personality/Time Commitment

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a very intelligent, easy to train breed, but they are also can be a very active breed. Their purpose was to be a herding dog, bred to share in the daily life as driving dogs, guardians of family and property, and as companions. This breed is not one to sit quietly in a backyard for days. While they tolerate being kenneled  or crated, they need human contact and socialization in order to remain well rounded.

As a family companion the Cardigan requires socialization and obedience training to become a well mannered dog.  A Cardi that does not receive adequate socialization and exposure to different situations can grow up to become unsociable, and fearful. They can develop behavior problems because of boredom.
Generally, Cardis do well when with children and other pets. Any breed of dog, that exhibits extreme shyness or aggression should be avoided at all costs.
A cardigan is a small dog,  that is a not a couch potato. They are active, energetic dogs that  prefer to have your companionship and to be part of your family.

If your job or other obligations prevent you from spending quality time with a Cardigan, then it may not be a proper breed for you.

Care and Maintenance

The Cardigan has a  moderate double coat that doesn't mat easily. Regular brushing about once a week is needed. They do shed.  If you are allergic to dog hair and dander, this is not the breed for you. The Cardigan is a clean dog,  mud or dirt generally comes out easily once it dries. They require a bath only a few times a year. This is an athletic breed and they need regular, exercise to maintain condition and good muscle tone. Throwing a ball, walking, biking, hiking, and swimming are all good forms of exercise. A fenced yard is always a good idea

Health

Cardigan Welsh Corgi for the most part are a healthy breed. The Cardi's life expectancy on average is 10-16 years.   Inherited, genetic problems do happen in all breeds. Cardigans do have some genetic problems, which may include Hip Dysplasia, PRA.  The DNA marker has been found for PRA.  Breeding stock should all be tested, if not known to be clear. PRA carriers if sold, to pet home. should be spay or neutered. Only knowledgeable breeder should breed PRA carriers.

Pets should be spayed or neutered to decrease the risk cancers. A healthy, Cardigan will only require a yearly Vet exam and regular health care.

Reputable breeders screen all breeding stock for known genetic problems.

Merles should only be breed to Black and white Pointed Cardigans. Breeding merle to merle can cause many health problems, deafness and blindness  are just 2.
